Follow Georgia's Antebellum Trail
Antebellum means before the war. The war of Northern aggression. The Antebellum Trail is a 100-mile trek through seven communities that virtually escaped General Sherman's burning march through Georgia. Madison's authentic Southern architecture, delightful restaurants, abundant shopping, and good old fashioned Southern charm provide the perfect setting for a sublime walk into the history of art and beauty.

I just spent two nights with my sister and mom at the Madison Oaks Inn. It was the PERFECT spot for our girls weekend. The house itself is elegant beyond belief. Oaks line the drive up to the house and gardens surround it. Rocking chairs invite the guests to the porch if they can tear themselves away from plush rooms complete with large private bathrooms, robes, slippers and lovely views of the property. The inn provides a sumptuous 2 course breakfast. Did I mention the tea/coffee service upstairs every morning? Lovely. If you are looking for a B and B full of elegant details, comfort, breakfast fit for a queen and southern charm- this is it.

Madison, off I-20, an hour's drive east from Atlanta, was once populated by wealthy merchants and cotton planters who erected houses that were fine examples of Federal and Greek Revival architecture. Antebellum travelers called it "the wealthiest and most aristocratic village between Charleston and New Orleans." Late in 1864, with Atlanta in flames, Gen. William T. Sherman's Union juggernaut reached Madison's outskirts. Happily for us, they were met by former U.S. Senator Joshua Hill, a secession opponent who'd known Sherman in Washington. Old ties prevailed, and the town was spared. Today, thousands of visitors come to see the oak-lined streets, the historic homes, the parks, gardens, churches, galleries, and antique shops. The historic district encompasses most of the town and was recognized by the Department of Interior as one of the finest such districts in the South.

This lovely Federal style house is the real thing -- a sensitive B&B restoration of an old white clapboard house, originally built as a private dwelling, done with charm and authenticity. The old wood floors and winding stairs and original mantels and high plank ceilings are beautiful. Dolly Madison and James Madison rooms are both lovely, with genuine but comfortable antique beds. The innkeeper and staff are friendly and helpful and offer a delicious breakfast. Take a delightful stroll of two blocks to the town center. What a bargain!

Bruce Weiner Microcar Museum
The microcar, born out of need, became the symbol of a people's spirit. After 1945 Europe lay in ruins. A shell-shocked population came out of the bomb shelters and faced an unimaginable scene of devastation. As if the seemingly endless task of clearing away the rubble wasn't enough, there were shortages of raw materials, electricity and gas. The astonishing rebuilding of an entire continent over a period of ten years was accomplished through a unity of spirit and purpose unimaginable today.

Heritage Hall
This Greek Revival home, built in 1811 by Dr. Elijah Evans Jones, is unique in Madison in that it is the only home in town with four columns flanked by two square piers. The front entry repeats the same design. Like many antebellum homes in the area, Heritage Hall was originally part of an in-town farm on four acres. The house was constructed 200 feet from its current site and moved prior to 1912 when the owner at that time sold a portion of the acreage to the Methodists for the construction of their new sanctuary.
